The economics of radiology have changed.
Physician compensation has increased. Recruitment and retention remain difficult. Coverage expectations continue to expand. And many essential radiology services cannot be supported by professional reimbursement alone.
For many hospitals, additional financial support may be necessary.
But financial support should not become the strategy.
The more important conversation is what that investment is designed to enable:
• Reliable coverage
• Timely patient access
• Sustainable staffing
• Strong operational performance
• Physician engagement
• Quality and service expectations
• Long-term stability
When financial support increases without clearly defined expectations, it becomes difficult for either side to determine whether the arrangement is actually working.
My latest article looks at why hospital support for radiology is increasing — and what hospital and radiology leadership should expect that investment to deliver.
